BENSGOTHIC is also based on the work of the artist Ben Shahn. (See Bensfolk for more info.)
These two fonts (Regular and Ligatures) are designed to be used together to evoke Shahn's hand-lettering. This style--which he applied to psalms, Christmas cards, posters, and many other items--suggests inscriptional capitals like those of Byzantine mosaics, the Bayeux tapestry, or medieval manuscripts.| Bensgothic Ligatures 2.0 has been tweaked and remapped for easier use. Check out the download to see what's available and how to use it. |

The name Bensgothic was chosen partly for its appearance and with the awareness that it can only add confusion. The word 'gothic' is overburdened with many meanings, often contradictory or multi-layered.'Gothic' is often first applied by detractors, later to be adopted as a badge of honor. It can refer to things that suggest an unspecified past that now--to sophisticated, modern eyes--may seem somewhat quaint, crude, or mysterious. In typography, 'gothic' can mean 'sans serif' as in Novel Gothic, Publicity Gothic, etc., or it can refer to the altogether different 'Old English' or blackletter fonts.
