Bensgothic Regular& Ligatures

BENSGOTHIC was inspired by the work of the artist Ben Shahn. (See also Bensfolk.)

These two fonts (Regular and Ligatures) are designed to be used together to evoke Shahn's hand-lettering. This style--which he applied to psalms, Christmas cards, posters, and many other items--suggests inscriptional capitals like those of Byzantine mosaics, the Bayeux tapestry, or medieval manuscripts.

Character Set

The Regular font includes two variants of each capital letter, punctuation, numbers, and international characters. The Ligatures font includes many special letter pairs and linking L and T combinations for a totally handlettered look.

The name Bensgothic was chosen partly with the awareness that it can only add confusion. The word gothic is overburdened with many meanings, referring to completely different styles and periods. In typography, gothic can mean sans serif as in Franklin Gothic, Publicity Gothic, etc., but it is also used to refer to "Old English" or blackletter fonts.
