The JIM DANDY fonts are my interpretation of a 19th-century font called "Jim Crow." Suggests a broadside, a circus poster, or Western sign. Jeff Levine jogged my memory with a scan of this gem from a "Formatt matte acetate adhesive type sheet catalog." It appears not to have been digitized yet. Thanks, Jeff, for the tip and the encouragement. My version is completely redrawn, not autotraced, for nice clean letters at the larger sizes where the great detail shows. The Regular font is based on th original; I've also created companion fonts that can be used alone, or layered and colored to give even more variety. |
"Jim Crow" refers to laws of racial segregation in the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries. For more information on this shameful period, check this site. That's why I've changed the name of my version of this historic font. |
